Adam Azim to face Steve Claggett on BBC return, May 30
Boxing News
Adam Azim will face Steve Claggett on May 30 at Wembley Arena in London, with the bout set to air live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer as he returns from injury.
The contest marks Adam Azim’s first outing since a disrupted start to 2026, after his planned fight with Gustavo Lemos in January was first postponed due to injuries to both fighters. The BBC reported that a rearranged date was scrapped entirely following Lemos’ withdrawal. Azim last boxed in November, stopping Kurt Scoby in the final round, and had been targeting momentum toward title contention before the setback.
Claggett (40-8-2) had already been under consideration as an opponent for Azim last summer, with trainer Shane McGuigan identifying him as a suitable test that could extend Azim and provide experienced rounds. That matchup now materialises as Azim resumes his campaign at super lightweight.
The 24-year-old enters the fight unbeaten in 14 contests, with his team actively positioning him for a move toward the division’s leading contenders. He is currently ranked across all four major sanctioning bodies and The Ring, reflecting a steady climb toward world level.
Steve Claggett arrives with 40 wins and more than 17 years as a professional, having previously challenged Teofimo Lopez for the WBO and Ring titles in 2024, losing on points. Since that defeat, he has fought twice, recording stoppage wins over Eduardo Estela and Alejandro Frias Rodriguez, the latter in March.
Claggett will be approaching his 37th birthday at the time of the bout and represents a step up in experience for Azim, having fought recently for a world championship. He is, however, unlikely to be seen by commentators as a step up in level comparable to what Gustavo Lemos would have provided.
For Azim and promoter Boxxer, the chance to headline a Saturday night UK broadcast on BBC Two provides greater exposure as he aims to establish himself among Britain’s emerging stars in the sport.
An impressive performance from Azim would likely strengthen his push toward a title opportunity, while Claggett has the chance to reinsert himself into the division’s upper tier with a big upset on UK soil.
Editor’s Note: This article was updated to state that the contest will air on BBC Two, rather than BBC One, as originally erroneously reported on the BBC’s own website.
