Jai Opetaia has been officially stripped of his IBF cruiserweight title following his March 8 victory over Brandon Glanton. The IBF ruled the title vacant after withdrawing sanction for the bout, which was later deemed an unsanctioned contest.

IBF alerted to Opetaia-Glanton bout via social media

The IBF confirmed discussions began on February 11, 2026, when President Daryl Peoples became aware of the scheduled contest through social media. He subsequently reminded Opetaia’s representatives of IBF Rule 5 governing champions and unification bouts.

Michael Francis, head of Tasman Fighters and Opetaia’s IBF-registered promoter, then submitted an application requesting sanction for an optional defence of the IBF cruiserweight title.

IBF denies sanction under Rule 5.E.2

The IBF rejected the initial application under Rule 5.E.2, which limits unification bouts to recognized titles from the WBA, WBC, and WBO. Francis requested reconsideration, arguing the bout would not be a unification and that the Zuffa belt could be treated similarly to the IBO.

IBF President Peoples rejected that comparison, stating the organization recognizes the IBO and operates within a regulated framework alongside other sanctioning bodies. Sanction remained denied at that stage.

February 28 email resets communication process

Discussions later resumed involving attorney Joshua Dubin and Sean Gibbons, who acted as a mediator at the request of Harrison Whitman. In an email dated February 28, 2026, Gibbons wrote: “Any prior requests related to this bout were unauthorized and should be disregarded.”

From that point, the IBF confirmed all further communications were conducted through Gibbons and Dubin.

March 3 assurances on Zuffa title secure sanction

On March 3, the IBF received written confirmation from Dubin on behalf of Opetaia stating that “Zuffa Boxing … will not bill or otherwise promote the bout as a ‘unification.’”

The letter further stated that “[a]ny belt awarded will be characterized as a trophy or token of recognition.” Gibbons also represented that the Zuffa title would not be contested.

Based on those assurances, the IBF granted sanction for the bout on March 5.

March 6 press conference triggers sanction withdrawal

Despite those representations, it was made clear at the March 6 press conference in Las Vegas that the fight would be contested for the “Zuffa World Cruiserweight Championship.”

The IBF stated: “The IBF notified Gibbons that sanction had been withdrawn for Opetaia vs. Glanton following the press conference.” Sanction fees paid on March 6 were returned the following day.

IBF invokes Rule 5.H to vacate title

As a result of the withdrawal, the bout was classified as an unsanctioned contest under IBF Rule 5.H. The rule states: “If a Champion participates in an unsanctioned contest within his prescribed weight limit, the title will be declared vacant whether the Champion wins or loses the bout.”

The IBF Board of Directors met via teleconference on March 19, 2026, and voted to vacate the title. The organization added that its rules “don’t always yield the preferred or popular outcome, but they provide structure and transparency.”

Opetaia retains Ring and Zuffa titles after Glanton win

Opetaia defeated Brandon Glanton by unanimous decision on March 8 at Meta Apex in Las Vegas. The bout proceeded without IBF sanction following the late withdrawal.

He remains The Ring cruiserweight champion and holds the Zuffa title.

Second IBF stripping follows Zorro bout in 2023

This marks the second time Opetaia has been stripped of the IBF title. In December 2023, he lost the belt after facing Ellis Zorro in an unsanctioned bout while owing a mandatory defence against Mairis Briedis.

He later regained the title by defeating Briedis in their rematch in May 2024.

Four successful defenses preceded Glanton fight

Following his victory over Briedis, Opetaia made four successful defenses of the IBF title. He stopped Jack Massey in October 2024, knocked out David Nyika in January 2025, halted Claudio Squeo in June 2025, and stopped Huseyin Cinkara in December 2025.

He entered the Glanton bout on the back of that run of defenses.

IBF title now vacant as contenders line up

The IBF cruiserweight title is now vacant following the ruling, with leading contenders expected to be ordered into a bout to determine a new champion.

Britain’s Chris Billam-Smith is currently the IBF’s highest-ranked cruiserweight, though his free agent status leaves his immediate path unclear.

Viddal Riley is set to face Mateusz Masternak on April 4, 2026, at the O2 Arena on the Deontay Wilder vs Derek Chisora undercard. The bout had already been ordered as an eliminator for the IBF cruiserweight title.

A victory for Riley could position him for a shot at the vacant belt, potentially setting up an all-British clash with Billam-Smith.
