DAZN is finally here in the UK, although boxing fans will already be familiar with DAZN. They made a massive play for the US sports streaming market, partnering with infamous UK promoter Eddie Hearn in 2018. Although they’ve struggled to gain the type of foothold and market share they were expecting, for boxing fans, they’ve been a revelation.
They consistently had the strongest fight schedule of any US broadcaster through most 2019. With the likes of both Anthony Joshua‘s fights with Andy Ruiz, capturing the US fans attention during the year.
Like most of the world, their plans for 2020 were slowed significantly by the pandemic. These plans included their global expansion, and entry into the competitive UK boxing market to compete with the likes of Sky and BT Sports. Initially pencilled in for May 2020, Canelo’s ill-fated clash with Billy Joe Saunders was set to be the first fight on the platform.
However, with the world shutting down, UK fans would have to wait until December 2020 to get a chance to use the platform.
They started with a strong lineup, which included Golovkin vs Szeremeta, Canelo vs Callum Smith and upcoming star Ryan Garcia vs Luke Campbell.
One of the interesting subplots in the sport is how promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing juggle their dual loyalties between Sky Sports and DAZN. Sky currently has the exclusive rights to Matchroom’s UK shows, while their US shows are exclusive to DAZN Worldwide. These commitments could lead to some interesting conflicts, especially if Eddie’s bigger UK stars box internationally.
