Billam-Smith Makes Pick For Zurdo vs Benavidez, Details Free Agency Plans
Boxing News
Chris Billam-Smith says most observers are siding with David Benavidez against Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, but has revised his own prediction after seeing the pair face off, while also outlining his current position as a promotional free agent.
Revises prediction to 60-40 after Ramirez face-off
Speaking to Talk Sport Boxing, Billam-Smith said the size difference between the fighters during their face-off changed his view of the fight, shifting from a marginal edge to a clearer position in Ramirez’s favour.
He now sees the bout as a “60-40 advantage to Zurdo,” adding that his experience of sharing the ring with Ramirez also informs that view. He described him as “a very smart fighter, a lot smarter than he looks.”
Motivation drop after Ramirez loss and undercard return
Following his defeat to Ramirez, Billam-Smith admitted to a loss of motivation, pointing to the difficulty of adjusting from headlining events to fighting on an undercard in front of a smaller audience.
He has not fought since April of last year, when he defeated Brandon Glanton on the Eubank vs Benn undercard, and used the time away from the ring to reset both physically and mentally. The break allowed him to focus on family while also addressing weaknesses and minor issues that are often difficult to fix during a training camp.
Free agency, Zuffa interest, and return timeline
Billam-Smith confirmed he is currently without a promoter and is actively reviewing his options with his team, including potential opponents, promotional partners, and contract structures.
He indicated he would listen to an offer from Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, particularly if it led to a fight with Jai Opetaia, though stressed that his team is currently open to discussions across the board. He also emphasised that broadcasters are more important than promoters for his personal brand, and that the right deal must include exposure, positioning, and a clear long-term plan, not just financial terms.
Billam-Smith is targeting a return in early summer, though acknowledged that timing could depend on securing a new promotional agreement. He believes the unexpected break has left him refreshed and is aiming to prove himself as the top cruiserweight in the division within the next year to year and a half, but must first finalise his promotional situation to move forward.
