Ryan Garcia confirms contact over Gervonta Davis rematch but insists on 147lbs

Ryan Garcia says Gervonta Davis and adviser Al Haymon have contacted his team about a rematch, but the WBC welterweight champion insists he will not agree to another catchweight.

Garcia, who stopped Conor Benn in the second round in Las Vegas last weekend, has set a 147lb limit as a condition of facing Davis again. He also wants his former opponent to have a tune-up bout first.

“I can confirm Gervonta and Al [Haymon] have contacted my team,” Garcia wrote on X. “147 or nothing. And I want him to get a tune-up fight and be at his best when we fight. He has some stuff to handle, but we, for sure, are going to get it going on. Let’s rumble.”

A unification fight with WBA welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez was discussed after Garcia’s victory over Benn, but Garcia has continued to pursue a second meeting with Davis, who handed him his first professional defeat in April 2023.

The weight is already a point of disagreement. Garcia publicly challenged Davis to move up to the welterweight limit, writing: “Gervonta cool, but he don’t want the smoke. What’s up with you? I went to 136, you can’t come to 147. Don’t be shaky now. I need that if you want it. If not, there’s nothing to be said.”

Davis responded with a counteroffer of 144lbs and said he had spoken to Haymon.

“No lie, for you I’ll do 144. Word, say it’s a bet! And I’ll get this [stuff] I’m going through out the way! Just give the word,” Davis wrote.

Garcia’s refusal to go below 147lbs leaves the fighters three pounds apart. The issue carries particular weight because Garcia has repeatedly argued that the conditions attached to their first contest affected his performance.

That fight, staged at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, took place at a 136lb catchweight with a 10lb rehydration clause. Davis dropped Garcia with a left hand in the second round before stopping him with a body shot in the seventh. Garcia has since maintained that he was drained by the agreed restrictions.

Davis has not fought since his majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr in March 2025 and has not won since June 2024. A proposed rematch with Roach did not go ahead, while his scheduled November 2025 bout with Jake Paul was cancelled less than two weeks before the event amid domestic abuse allegations contained in a civil lawsuit.

That period of inactivity led the WBA to designate Davis its lightweight champion in recess. His availability is also unclear because of unresolved criminal and probation proceedings arising from an alleged October 2025 incident in Miami.

Davis was arrested in January over allegations made by a former girlfriend. An active probation-violation warrant also remains listed in Maryland, where he is serving probation in connection with his 2020 hit-and-run conviction.

During early-summer discussions about a possible fight with Devin Haney, Haymon told Bill Haney that Davis would not be available until early 2027. Davis publicly disputed that timetable.

Garcia has made clear that he wants Davis to resolve those matters and return with a tune-up before any rematch. Even then, the camps would still have to settle the weight, with Garcia demanding the full welterweight limit and Davis offering 144lbs.
