Jose Armando Resendiz lined up to replace Jermall Charlo against Koen Mazoudier
- Resendiz has reportedly accepted the October 17 fight on 10 days’ notice, but No Limit says the replacement is not yet final
- Charlo’s injury withdrawal is the second collapse of his proposed fight with Mazoudier in three months
- Mazoudier expects a late tactical adjustment but believes beating the younger, more active Resendiz could carry greater credit
Jose Armando Resendiz is being lined up to replace the injured Jermall Charlo against Koen Mazoudier on October 17 at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
The Ring reported that Resendiz had accepted the 10-round fight on 10 days’ notice, although Mazoudier’s promoter, No Limit, said the replacement had not yet been finalised.
Charlo’s withdrawal is the second time in three months that his proposed fight with Mazoudier has fallen through. They were initially scheduled to meet on the undercard of Tim Tszyu-Errol Spence Jr in Sydney in July, but Charlo was denied a visa to enter Australia and the bout was moved to Las Vegas.
The nature of Charlo’s training injury has not been disclosed. Mazoudier told Fox Sports Australia that he had received little information and questioned the circumstances of another late withdrawal.
“They’ve said injury. That’s the easiest way to pull yourself out of a fight,” Mazoudier said. “I know he’s had different problems and issues getting himself into a fight at this stage. I sort of feel sorry for him, like the fact that he can’t pull himself together. Ten days out, two times in a row now. It makes me just think there’s something not right in his personal life.”
Charlo, 36, has fought only four times since 2020. The unbeaten former junior-middleweight and middleweight champion last boxed in May 2025, dropping Thomas LaManna three times on the way to a sixth-round stoppage in Las Vegas. That appearance ended an 18-month absence, and he has now been out of the ring for a further 17 months.
Charlo has previously spoken publicly about his mental health, including depression and bipolar disorder. Discussing the treatment he received, he said: “I just had to start getting help with it, and it made me a lot better.” No timetable has been announced for his return following the latest injury.
Resendiz, 27, has a record of 16-3 (11 KOs). He lost the WBA super-middleweight title to Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision in May 2026, having claimed the interim belt with a split-decision upset of Caleb Plant in May 2025. He was elevated to full champion on 1 January 2026 following Terence Crawford’s retirement.
The victory over Plant disrupted plans for a fight between Plant and Charlo. Charlo was later positioned to challenge Resendiz, only to be removed from that bout and replaced by Munguia. Resendiz also owns a stoppage victory over former unified junior-middleweight champion Jarrett Hurd.
Mazoudier acknowledged that Resendiz’s come-forward approach would require a late tactical adjustment after a camp spent preparing for Charlo.
“He’s a different style, more a come-forward style, heavy hands, sort of tight defence from what I’ve seen of him,” Mazoudier said. “But ultimately, the way I look at it is, there’s a lot of positives.”
Mazoudier, 31, has won four consecutive fights since his ninth-round stoppage defeat by Nikita Tszyu in August 2024. During that run, he won the Australian junior-middleweight title and made two successful defences, most recently beating Sam Beck by majority decision on August 26.
The Australian also believes a victory over the younger, more active Resendiz could carry more credit than beating Charlo at this stage of the American’s career.
“Beating Charlo would have come with excuses like, ‘He is old and inactive’, and all these different reasons why I’d beaten him,” he said. “Whereas this guy’s a young, hungry, active former champion.”
Resendiz-Mazoudier is scheduled to open the DAZN on TNT tripleheader topped by Sebastian Fundora’s WBC junior-middleweight title defence against mandatory challenger Ermal Hadribeaj. Brandon Figueroa’s first defence of the WBA featherweight title against Tomoki Kameda is the co-feature.
“Ultimately, at this point, I couldn’t really care who’s in front of me,” Mazoudier said. “Knowing that I’ve got another former world champion, it stays the same. It’s full steam ahead still for me.”
Resendiz must still be formally confirmed as Charlo’s replacement, with the remaining arrangements to be completed before fight week in Las Vegas.
