Jaron Ennis became a two-weight world champion and unified titleholder at junior middleweight after stopping Xander Zayas in the seventh round of a dramatic WBA/WBO clash at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Ennis dropped Zayas three times before the Puerto Rican’s corner intervened at 1:49 of the seventh, ending a fight that had looked close to a showcase early before turning into the most testing night of Ennis’ unbeaten professional career.

The Philadelphia fighter, now 36-0 with 32 knockouts, made a fast start and appeared to have Zayas under immediate pressure. Switching between orthodox and southpaw, Ennis found range with his jab, straight left hand and right hook, then dropped Zayas in the opening round after a burst of clean power shots. Zayas made it to the bell, but he looked shaken in his corner and had to absorb further punishment as Ennis continued to control the exchanges in the second.

That early momentum did not tell the whole story. Zayas, who entered unbeaten and left 23-1, forced Ennis into the kind of fight he had rarely had to endure. In the third round, a heavy right hand changed the tone, wobbling Ennis and driving him back towards the ropes. Ennis had to hold, fire back under pressure and steady himself as Zayas tried to seize the moment in front of a loud Barclays Center crowd.

The fourth round kept the fight in the same dangerous pattern. Ennis worked the body, changed angles and looked for openings around the guard, but Zayas stood his ground and repeatedly landed right hands of his own. What had appeared to be heading towards an early Ennis procession had become a violent, two-way fight, with Zayas making the favourite look vulnerable even as he continued taking the heavier damage.

Ennis regained clear control in the fifth. As both fighters exchanged at close range, he landed a lead right uppercut that put Zayas down for a second time. The knockdown was heavier than the first, and Zayas rose with unsteady legs before spending the rest of the round trying to survive as Ennis pressed him with power shots.

Zayas was examined by the ringside doctor before the sixth, and referee Harvey Dock warned him between rounds that he could not continue taking the same punishment. The pace finally dipped after five frantic rounds, with Zayas moving more and trying to buy time while Ennis stalked him and picked his moments. Even as Zayas continued landing, the difference in effect between the fighters’ punches had become increasingly clear.

The finish came in the seventh after Ennis resumed his attack to the head and body. Zayas tried to stand his ground inside but was hurt by another combination, then took a knee as Ennis swarmed with a big right hook and follow-up pressure. During Dock’s count, Zayas’ corner stopped the contest, giving Ennis the WBA and WBO titles at 154lbs.

Promoter Eddie Hearn praised both fighters afterwards, saying, “That was one of the most exciting, thrilling fights I’ve ever seen at ringside.” Hearn also pointed to the way Ennis had to answer a serious challenge, adding, “That’s what big-time boxing is all about.” Before the fight, Hearn had credited Zayas for taking the assignment, saying he had “big balls”, and the 23-year-old’s performance justified that respect even in defeat.

Ennis was able to celebrate a major step in his move up from welterweight, where he had not been able to secure every belt before leaving the division. “I feel tremendous hearing ‘and the new unified world champion at 154,’” he said. “I put on a show for the fans and I appreciated him taking this, because he didn’t have to.” Asked what he had expected from Zayas, Ennis replied, “I knew.”

Zayas, who lost his unbeaten record but pushed Ennis into adversity, acknowledged the scale of the night and the disappointment of falling short. “It was an amazing night,” he said. “I showed if you dream big, sometimes you fall short, but it’s part of the journey.”

The result gives Ennis the unified platform he had been chasing in a second weight class and immediately sharpens the focus on what comes next. He has again stated his desire to become undisputed at 154lbs, but the most obvious fight is a revived meeting with Vergil Ortiz, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked junior middleweight contender, after the pair were previously slated to fight earlier in the year. With Ennis now holding two belts, it adds further fire to some of boxing’s most anticipated potential contests.
