Jai Opetaia Finishes David Nyika In Devastating Fashion To Retain 200 lb IBF & Ring Titles

Jai Opetaia solidified his position as the top cruiserweight in the world with a hard-fought fourth-round stoppage of David Nyika to retain his IBF and Ring Magazine titles in Broadbeach, Australia.

The Trans-Tasman clash was action-packed, with Opetaia describing it afterwards as a “dogfight.” The decisive moment came in the fourth round when the Australian champion landed a powerful uppercut that sent Nyika to the canvas.

Although the New Zealander briefly continued, a follow-up right and left hook combination left him trapped on the ropes. Opetaia then delivered a devastating left hook that floored Nyika for several minutes.

Medical staff quickly attended to Nyika, who was able to leave the ring under his own accord after receiving oxygen and assistance. The crowd showed their respect with a warm round of applause, which was echoed by Opetaia during his post-fight interview.

“He took the fight on three weeks’ notice and gave me a dogfight,” Opetaia said. “I thought he’d come out here and play games, but he didn’t, and I respect that. I take my hat off to David. Thank you.”

Opetaia expressed his desire to unify the division and called out Mexican WBA and WBO titleholder Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.

“Ramirez, I’m coming for those belts,” Opetaia stated. “I’ve been waiting for these unification fights for a long time, and I’m coming for my belts.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn suggested that a move up to heavyweight could also be in Opetaia’s future, with a potential clash against Oleksandr Usyk within 12 to 18 months. Usyk, currently a unified heavyweight champion, has indicated a willingness to return to cruiserweight for the right fight.

On the undercard, WBO #5 heavyweight contender Justis Huni continued his impressive progress with a second-round stoppage of Shaun Potgieter. The win moved Huni to 12-0, marking his third fight in six months.

Promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed in the lead-up to the fight that Matchroom and Queensbury Promotions are in preliminary talks for Huni to face fellow rising heavyweight Moses Itauma.
