What time does the fight start on ITV Tonight?
Following the recent boom in British boxing, ITV has started to get involved in broadcasting the sport again. Legendary with a particular generation of fan from the late 80’s & early 1990’s, ITV's The Big Fight Live brought us some of the most infamous nights in sport’s history. It still had a presence in the 2000’s, showing the likes of Joe Calzaghe and the early careers of Carl Froch and Tyson Fury. However, these were often tucked away from mainstream audiences on ITV4.
In 2017 they renewed their focus on the sport with the launch of their Pay-Per-View platform ITV Box Office. Their most significant signing to date, and leading most of their initial output, is Chris Eubank Jr. Their output increased in Autumn of 2017 when they acquired the rights of the hotly anticipated World Boxing Super Series tournament. Quarterfinals of both the Super middleweight & Cruiserweight tournaments took place over September and October 2017, to critical acclaim. The two Semi-Finals from both weights are due to take place in January & February 2018, with separate finals in May and June 2018.
While ITV has shown most of the tournament for free, both on the main Box Office channel and ITV4, they did pay wall Chris Eubank Jr’s lightly regarded quarterfinal bout with Avni Yildirim. Nonetheless, the semi-final fight between Eubank and George Groves is the channels first genuine PPV worthy clash. It could be the platform on which ITV builds itself back into a major broadcaster for the sport. Rather disappointingly, they also plan to paywall Callum Smith’s match-up with veteran Juergen Braehmer, the other semi-final. In the opinion of many, exposing betting favourite Smith to a wider audience would of help to build the Super Middleweight final. Perhaps a missed opportunity, not only for the tournament itself but for ITV’s own platform too. Hardcore fans need not fret too much, as they are offering a bundle with the Eubank/Groves clash for £20. Expect both of the finales to PPV come May and June.
